Herbalist Andrea Larsen will take you on a year long herbal medicine journey through the Green World as you immerse yourself in all things plant medicine.

This unique program will give you the tools and the confidence to prepare your own beautiful and powerful plant medicines at home as well as deepen your connection with the natural world so that you can turn to plants in trust and gratitude to heal all manner of ailments.

Get up close and personal with the green world so that you can gain hands on experience in identifying, foraging, growing and making foods and medicines from a wide variety of medicinal and edible plants.

Because this program runs for the entire year, you’ll hone the art of medicine making throughout the seasons, learning which plants and their various parts will make the best medicines at different times, and what those medicines will help with.

At the end of this program you’ll have made new friends and lifelong allies with many of the plants we work with and you’ll have a wide variety of tinctures, balms and various medicines to take home.

Course Outline:

1: Foundations in Herbalism 

  • History of Herbal Medicine

  • Cultivating Relationships with Healing Plants

  • Introduction to Botany

  • Plant Families

  • Herbal Actions /Energetics Overview

2: Materia Medica 

  • Each month we will meet and work with between 4-5 plants in great detail.

  • Learn to use plant medicines in accord with constitutional evaluation

3: Constitutions, Basic Anatomy & Physiology, Pathology

  • Excess/Deficiencies (using herbs to tonify, suppress or stimulate as needed)

  • The Digestive System, Reproductive Systems, Endocrine System, Respiratory System,
    Circulatory System/Cardiovascular System, Urinary System, Lymphatic System Overviews

  • Discussions of what can lead to disease symptoms in various bodily systems and applications of herbal medicines as therapies.

4: Herbal Energetics

5: Herbal Medicine Traditions

  • Further explore the history of herbal medicine through the traditions of Traditional Chinese Medicine, Ayurveda etc.

6: Ethical Foraging, Wild Crafting & Plant Identification

  • We’ll get out into the forest, into the garden, get up close and personal with plants and all that encompasses that.

7: Growing Your Own Herb Garden

  • We’ll start seeds, transplant, divide perennials, discuss & practice all things related to growing medicinal herbs.

8: Medicine Making Core Elements

  • What makes a potent medicine?

  • How to make teas, syrups, tinctures, salves, creams and more.

9: Advanced Medicine Making

  • Build upon your skills to create more complex and potent formulas

10: Food As Medicine

11: Herbal Pharmacology: Constituents and the Sum of the Whole

Cancellation Policy: 
Any registration cancellations before August 15, 2022 will be given a full refund minus a $50 administration fee. Refunds beyond August 2022 Will be dependent on circumstances and subject to a 300.00 materials fee.

Students will meet on a monthly basis here in the Cowichan Valley over a weekend as well as be given access to an online portal for extra video resources and reading materials.
